The tunnel maintains a constant temperature of minus 2 degrees Celsius year-round. Blue ice formations within the cave result from compressed snow layers that have expelled air bubbles over decades. Guided snowmobile expeditions typically depart from Gullfoss between 09:00 and 14:00, when daylight and weather conditions offer optimal visibility across the glacier surface. The highland road remains snow-covered from October through May, restricting tours to summer and early autumn months when meltwater streams activate along the glacier's southern margin.
